Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is a temple dedicated to the goddess of the lake, Ida Batari Dewi Ulun Danu on the edge of a large crater. The dominant temple is Meru (pagoda) dedicated to the goddess of the lake and the gods of Mount Batur and Mount Gunung Agung, the largest volcano in Bali. This temple was built in the 17th century in the worship of the main Hindu trinity, Brahma-Wisnu-Siwa.
Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, truly the 'temple of the source of Lake Beratan', is easily the most iconic shelter on the island that shares the quality of the scenery with the seaside temples of Uluwatu Temple and Tanah Lot Temple. The fine reflective surface of the lake that surrounds most of the temple grounds creates a unique floating impression, while the mountains in the Bedugul region surrounding the lake provide a beautiful background.
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is mostly referred to as Ulun Danu Temple but is not to be confused with Pura Ulun Danu Batur, which is on the edge of the caldera on Lake Batur. This is very important for Balinese people. Only here can you get holy water from certain varieties. The water is collected from the lake itself, right in front of the temple. Visitors must wear sling and not close. Bathing is prohibited. The lake is the highest water source for rivers and springs that irrigate central Bali. Therefore it is the most important. Temple priests say that the lake is fed by springs located in each wind direction. Each spring is the origin of water for a particular region in central Bali. So, farmers from North Bali collect their holy water from the springs north of the lake and so on. Pura Ulun Danu is located on the western edge of Lake Bratan on the Bedugul Plateau at the level of 1239m, is one of the most beautiful and most photographed temples in Bali. Ulun Danu is located in the now extinct volcanic caldera, Gunung Catur. This is one of the main sources of irrigation in the highlands of Bali, and this temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake.
